Pentecost
Sunday,
May 11, is Pentecost!
The
word "pentecost" means "fiftieth day." In most
Christian traditions, Pentecost Sunday occurs 50 days following
Easter Sunday.
The
sanctuary color for Pentecost Sunday is red, the color of the church. The
red symbolizes both the fire of Pentecost as well as the apostles and
early followers of Jesus who were gathered in the Upper Room for the
empowerment from God to proclaim the Gospel throughout the world.
For
Christians, Pentecost Sunday is a day to celebrate hope evoked by the
knowledge that God through His Holy Spirit is at work among His people.
It is a celebration of newness, of recreation, or renewal of purpose,
mission and calling as God's people. It is a celebration of God's ongoing
work in the world. Yet, it is also a recognition that His work is done
through His people as He pours out His presence upon them.
Pentecost
is the Church's celebration of the gift of the Holy Sprit. It comes from
the realization that God's very life, breath and energy lives in, with
and among us. Those who are Christians experience this life through Jesus
because they see the Spirit so fully manifest in him.
The
feast day of Pentecost remembers a day not long after Jesus'
resurrection when the energy of the Spirit was poured out in power upon
the Church. It was a unifying Spirit that crossed the artificial
boundaries of language, race and culture. People could speak and be
understood; strangers heard one another; communion happened. The Spirit
breathes peace.
Because
the Holy Spirit made and makes possible the existence of the Church, the
Feast of Pentecost is considered to be the birthday of the Church:
- the day on which we are given the gift of the Holy Spirit of
God;
- the energy that keeps the Church in existence;
- the voice that speaks to us when we are very quiet inside;
- the bearer to us of what God created us to hear and what
Jesus wanted us to learn.
The Holy
Spirit is in us and in the world, linking us one to another.

A Mother's Prayer
Dear
Lord,
Thank
you for the blessings of my children. Make me a wise mother, O Lord. Keep
me calm and give me patience to bear the small, irritating things in the
daily routine of life. Give me tolerance and understanding to bridge the
gulf between my generation and that of my children.
I
want my children to love you, worship you and serve you as best they can.
Grant me the wisdom to know how to influence them to live godly lives.
Prevent me from provoking my children to anger and from manipulating or
nagging them. Give me a sense of humor that I may laugh with them but
never at them. Let me refrain from preaching with words.
Fill
our household with abiding love and respect, and help us all be united in
purpose to do your will. Keep me humble. Keep my children close to
me, O Lord, though miles may separate us. And let your light so
shine upon me that they, too, will perceive your glory. In the name of
Christ our Lord. Amen

Thank You from CDC Board
The
CDC Board of Directors would like to take this opportunity to thank
everyone who brought "Gifts" for the Child Development Center
Birthday Party. We had an overwhelming response and lots of wonderful
gifts.
We
would also like to thank everyone who brought food for the reception
after the worship service. All the different sandwiches, potato and pasta
salads were fabulous. We definitely know how to eat at St. Andrews.
It
is a pleasure to see the Spirit working in this congregation. Thank you
for making the Child Development Center's "Sweet Sixteen" party
such a wonderful success!

Book Sale - May 14
A
book sale to benefit the St. Andrews CDC will be held on Wednesday night,
May 14.
Usborne
Books are fun, colorful, educational books for kids of all ages. With
beautiful illustrations on every page and age-appropriate, bite-sized
bits of text, these books hold a child's interest and make reading fun!
Flaps, ducks and touch-feely pages keep younger children enthralled,
while puzzles, stickers, stencils, and science experiments are just
some of the activities available for older children. Parents will
love the phonics-based text for young ones just learning to read and the
progressive series of chapter books for eager independent readers.
The
Book Fair will be held in the Fowler room and will be open 6:00 p.m. -
7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, May 14, and during drop-off and pick-up at the
CDC on Thursday, May 15, and Friday, May 16.
